I had the pleasure of meeting Darryl Nau this past weekend. The man is the real deal, and 100% genuine. He gives off so much positive energy that it is infectious and you can't help but feel happier than you did before you met him. I showed him my friend's old Blacken t-shirt and he signed it in the shape of a hot dog. I can't think of anything more fitting. Sticker Sighting - Scott Barker - BMXFU

Spotted a Yo Sick sticker on the inside of Scott Barker's cranks on the BMXFU site. You can also check out the third BMXFU online zine that Scott put together. It's FILLED with content from photos (I even have a few if you scroll down closer to the end), some videos, and audio mixtapes.

Discovered this great site/project about preserving hand painted signs in India.

HandpaintedType is a project that is dedicated to preserving the typographic practice of street painters around India. These painters, with the advent of local DTP (Desktop Publishers) shops, are rapidly going out of business with many of them switching to the quicker, cheaper but uglier vinyls. Many painters have given up their practice altogether.
The project involves documenting the typefaces of road side painters across India and digitizing it so that it serves as a resource for present and future generations.

Also, this is a sign I painted recently for someone as part of a trade.

Union Press: Issue One

Union Press is a collaborative project that has been in the works for the last few months between Brad Hill from BMXFU and Yo Sick. This is the first issue, and our aim with this publication was to make a tangible extension of our interests with photos, writing and illustrations, and to highlight some interesting characters in Canadian BMX that we have the pleasure of knowing. You can expect a two page broadsheet printed on newsprint, with fold out posters from OSS and Macneil. Inside you will find work from Brad Hill, myself and a list of contributors that includes Mike Cardin, Riley McMaster, Eric Marshall, and Nashville’s Andrew White.

You can find copies of it in bike shops across Canada that deal with Ten Pack Distribution. If you don’t have a local bike shop you can buy it in the online store for the cost of shipping.

To keep our approach fresh, issue 9 will be a box set of zines and materials produced by Holeshot's main contributors and friends. Since its beginning, Holeshot has generally taken the form of a normal 5.5"x8.5" zine format. To celebrate the end of the zine though, issue 9 will be a box set of zines and materials from Holeshot's contributors and friends. Included in each box set will be a multitude of zines, photographs, DVD-R, and BMX ephemera. Our working edition is 250. The end result will be a box that resembles a book that can be shelved. I've never actually met Ben Jensen, but I used to read his website Standard Issue for the writing for years, then he started to turn it in to a black and white print magazine with great illustrations that I would pick up around town. I realized a co-worker was writing a regular column, and then I started passing copies of Yo Sick to Ben through said intermediary. On top of life, family, kids, and Standard Issue, Ben also started to keep a drawing blog going called Way Bad where he posts low-brow illustrations whenever he feels like it, (face it, doing it every day is tough as shit). Math Club: Golden Triangle

A golden triangle, also known as the sublime triangle, is an isosceles triangle in which the two longer sides have equal lengths and in which the ratio of this length to that of the third, smaller side is the golden ratio:
Also, it is the shape of the triangles found in the points of pentagrams. The vertex angle is equal to:

Since the angles of a triangle sum to 180°, base angles are therefore 72° each. The golden triangle can also be found in a decagon, or a ten-sided polygon, by connecting any two adjacent vertices to the center. This will form a golden triangle. This is because: 180(10-2)/2=144 degrees is the interior angle and bisecting it through the vertex to the center, 144/2=72. The golden triangle is also uniquely identified as the only triangle to have its three angles in 2:2:1 proportion.

Logarithmic Spiral
The golden triangle is used to form a logarithmic spiral. By bisecting the base angles, a new point is created that in turn, makes another golden triangle. The bisection process can be continued infinitely, creating an infinite number of golden triangles. A logarithmic spiral can be drawn through the vertices. This spiral is also known as an equiangular spiral, a term coined by Rene Descartes. "If a straight line is drawn from the pole to any point on the curve, it cuts the curve at precisely the same angle," hence equiangular.

Golden Gnomon
Closely related to the golden triangle is the golden gnomon, which is the obtuse isosceles triangle in which the ratio of the length of the equal (shorter) sides to the length of the third side is the reciprocal of the golden ratio. The golden gnomon is also uniquely identified as a triangle having its three angles in 1:1:3 proportions. The acute angle is 36 degrees, which the same as the apex of the golden triangle.

The distance of AD and BD are both equal to φ, as seen in the figure. "The golden triangle has a ratio of base length to side length equal to the golden section φ, whereas the golden gnomon has the ratio of side length to base length equal to the golden section φ."

A golden triangle can be bisected into a golden triangle and a golden gnomon. The same is true for a golden gnomon. A golden gnomon and a golden triangle with their equal sides matching each other in length are also referred to as the obtuse and acute Robinson triangles. These isosceles triangles can be used to produce Penrose tilings. Penrose tiles are made from kites and darts. A kite is made from the golden triangle, and a dart is made from two gnomons.

Montreal - August 2010

These are some photos I dug up that I had almost forgotten about. I think I took these this past August on a last minute trip to Montreal. My friends Jeff and Marc were leaving to move out West the following week and had tickets to some metal concert in Montreal, so I tagged along with everyone and rode bikes. Jorden got a flat tire in the city, and tried to find somewhere to buy a tube, which resulted in us getting separated, and stranded at some street corner for hours until he got to his car and could charge his phone. The photo of Rich laying in the street I used in Issue 8, but I don't think the rest of these have seen the light of day.

It does a great job discussing the merits and shift in street art, and I certainly enjoy the term "post-graffiti". You can buy the new issue, or just click the link to read it online of course.

Making Faces

Most of these photos have appeared in past zines. Last year someone was painting these animated faces on a number of otherwise dull objects around the city. They even did a window display at Canteen. If 'street art' is supposed to make people take notice of their surroundings and/or improve the visual scenery, then I'd say these accomplish both quite happily.

The latest Holeshot Zine arrived the other day, and as usual it's loaded with great content that you won't find amongst other BMX publications. Superior zine quality too, with digital offset printing. There's a piece written by Andrew Burton about the mythological 'old guy', an interesting retrospective of Schwinn from 1996 - 2001, and some photos from Kyle Emery-Peck that make me really look forward to his Perma-Summer zine. Back in October on the 24th Yo Sick was at Canzine, Canada's largest zine fair and festival of alternative culture. Gave away a lot of zines, gave away a lot of candy, got a lot of really great zines, and met a lot of really great people. See you there next year.
